Every once in a while I enjoy hosting Live@Lunch, a popular live music show on local radio station KRFC. I’ve been doing this for quite a few years and have the luxury of booking and hosting what I feel are the most outstanding musical acts in Northern Colorado.
Enter The Burroughs
Johnny Burroughs is the dynamic frontman to this nine-piece-powerhouse soul band from Greeley. I’ve brought him to the Live@Lunch studio twice now and do my best to catch all his live performances in Fort Collins. Johnny just keeps getting better every time I see him on stage. The man can dance. Debonair and unrestrained, Johnny is grounded in the truest sense. He loves his family, God, motorcycles and music. Last week I sat down with him over tea and asked him a few questions. I’ve affectionately monikered him a ginger James Brown, the love child of Opie & and JT, and Ron Weasley on steroids.
But really, he’s just Johnny Burroughs. A guy who’s super talented, authentic, and ladies… he’s single.
“Music is the thing in my life that makes the most sense.”
Entertaining Fort Collins: How would you describe your sound?
Johnny Burroughs: Energetic, passionate and soulful. It makes you want to get up and dance.
Entertaining Fort Collins: When did you first realize you wanted to be a musician?
Johnny Burroughs: I grew up playing instruments in the church and started leading around age 15. I’m now the Worship Leader at Fusion Ministries in Greeley. Music is the thing in my life that makes the most sense. My job allows me to set my own hours; I knew I always wanted to lead worship and play music.
Entertaining Fort Collins: Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Johnny Burroughs: We warm up our voices for 10-20 minutes with vocal exercises; the band gets together and we work out the set list and sing the first song. We also have a special secret chant.
Entertaining Fort Collins: What is coming up music-wise for you in the next 6-8 months?
Johnny Burroughs: NewWestFest, promoting the new album “Sweaty Greeley Soul” and SpokesBuzz tour activities. We are also planned to participate in the Zombie Crawl/Ball festivities for Halloween.
Entertaining Fort Collins: What’s on your playlist right now?
Johnny Burroughs: Marvin Gaye and Bill Withers, early 70’s soul music, Alabama Shakes, Steffany Gretzinger (spiritual)
Entertaining Fort Collins: What are some of your hobbies besides music?
Johnny Burroughs: Riding motorcycles, dancing and baseball. Going to Coors Field is like a second church for me.
Entertaining Fort Collins: What’s your ultimate concert?
Johnny Burroughs: Seeing Stevie Wonder in an intimate setting would be fantastic!
You can catch The Burroughs on the coveted Mountain Stage during Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest, Saturday night, August 15, right before headliner Steve Miller Band.
